Thanks for Indians to provide a modicum of challenge and danger.

Thanks for vast herds of bison to kill and skin leaving the carcasses to rot.

Thanks for bounties on wolves and coyotes.

Thanks for the American dream, to vulgarize and to falsify until the bare lies shine through.

Thanks for the KKK. For nigger-killing lawmen, feeling their notches.

For decent church-going women, with their mean, pinched, bitter, evil faces.

Thanks for "Kill a Queer for Christ" stickers.

Thanks for laboratory AIDS.

Thanks for Prohibition and the war against drugs.

Thanks for a country where nobody's allowed to mind their own business.

Thanks for a nation of finks.

Yes, thanks for all the memories-- all right let's see your arms !

You always were a headache and you always were a bore.

Thanks for the last and greatest betrayal of the last and greatest of human dreams.

感謝を捧げよう。野生の七面鳥とリョコウバトに。健啖だけが取柄のアメリカ人に飲み込まれ、糞となって吐き出されるばかりの、その運命に。

感謝を捧げよう。略奪され、蝕まれたアメリカ大陸に。

ささやかな刺激と興奮の場を提供してくれたインディアンたちに。

打ち殺されて、皮をはがれた野牛たちに。ただ腐り果てていくだけの、膨大な数の亡きがらに。

そして、心優しきオオカミとコヨーテたちに。

感謝を捧げよう。手垢にまみれた、まやかしのアメリカン・ドリームに。まる裸にされた虚像の、最後の輝きに。

感謝を捧げよう。クー・クラックス・クラン（KKK）に。黒んぼ殺しの、誇り高き保安官に。

教会通いのご立派な女どもに。さもしく、やつれた、苦々しい、邪悪な面どもに。

感謝を捧げよう。「おかまを殺せ（キル・ア・クイーア）」のステッカーに。

AIDS研究所に。

禁酒法と麻薬戦争に。

感謝を捧げよう。誰にも干渉されずに生きることなどできないこの国に。

そう、密告者どもの国家に。

感謝を捧げよう。すべての思い出に・・・いいとも、たとえば戦争だ・・・

頭痛と退屈しか生み出さなかった、我らが戦争に。

感謝を捧げよう。最後で、最大の人類の夢に対する、最後で、最大の裏切りに。

毎度おなじみの、皮肉と韜晦に満ちたお話。このパターン大好きだ。

最初に出てくる、John Dilinger（1903－34）は、大恐慌時代、USA中西部で有名だった銀行強盗。

FBIがつけた彼のnickname「Public Enemy（社会の敵）」は、ご存知rap group「Public Enemy」の元ネタ。

John Dilingerはもちろん、生きているはずがない（笑）。またふざけたことを言っている。

バックのNBC Symphony Orchによる曲は、1960年頃に録音されたものをかぶせてある。

Burroughsのふざけた朗読と、合っているようで合っていないようで、えらくおもしろい。

Burroughsはおそらく口パクだと思うが、こういうのにもホイホイ乗ってくる腰の軽さがBurroughsの持ち味だ。
